Infertility can be defined as the inability of an individual to contribute to the process of conception biologically. It can also be used to refer to the state of a female who is not able to carry a pregnancy to the last stage. Infertility causes are many. Some of them can be treated while others have no solution.Some of the factors that lead to people being infertile are common to both males and females. Genetic factors can make one infertile. A rearrangement of chromosomes leads to a condition known as a Robertsonian translocation. This condition can cause complete inability to conceive in both partners. It can also cause abortions to occur.

General factors such as thyroid disorders, adrenal disease as well as diabetes mellitus can lead to infertility. Hypothalamic pituitary factors are also known causes of this condition. There are many environmental conditions that have been associated being infertile. Glues and other toxins are some of the environmental factors that should be avoided. Also in this category are silicones, volatile organic solvents, pesticides and chemical dusts. Smoking cigarettes also increases the risk of one being infertile. Those who smoke increase their chances by up to 60%.

Scientists have also identified a virus referred to as Adeno-associated virus that is said to have a role in male infertility. When DNA in human cells is changed mutations occur. This process can cause one to be infertile because the body will try to prevent the DNA which is tainted from being passed on.

There are many other factors than can only cause infertility in women. For a woman to get a child there are several requirements that must be met. The first one is intercourse. Sex must take place at the time when the egg is being released from the ovary. The human systems that produce the sperms and the eggs must be working well. The womans hormones must also be balanced.

Inability to conceive can be caused by a womans ovaries not maturing and thus not releasing the egg. In such a case medicine can be given to stimulate the follicles to mature in the ovaries. Infections such as Chlamydia can cause damage to the fallopian tubes and thus lead to one being infertile. Weight and age also affect the chances of a woman conceiving. Fertility declines after reaching 35 years. Pelvic inflammatory disease, tubal blockage, ovulation problems as well as uterine problems and endometriosis are some of the other factors that can lead to this condition.

There are factors that are only specific to males. The quality of semen produced by a man determines how fertile he is. Low quality semen can cause one to be infertile. Another common cause of this condition is low sperm count. Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia is a condition that leads to immobile sperm.

In some people infertility causes remain unexplained. There are treatment options for individuals who are infertile. However not every case can be treated. Treatment methods include fertility treatments and counseling. Sometimes this two are used together. Drugs that are offered to women include follicle stimulating hormone and human menopausal gonadotropin.
